Here are some questions from a few years ago. Answers tweaked where necessary and a few more questions and answers added -
1. We are camping. For this event can we set up tents near/on the observing field? My daughter is 6 and chances are that she will be asleep long before me. I’d like to be observing right outside of the tent while she sleeps if this is possible. If not, I understand and will adjust viewing plans accordingly
Yes, you can set up your tent right on the field. A restroom is near by (in Barton Hall)
2. What time does dinner start? We’ll be driving up from New Orleans in the afternoon of Friday the 13th?
Dinner will be at 4 PM. Please arrive by 4:30 PM if you have purchased meals.
3. What time is breakfast each morning?
Breakfast will be at 9 am each morning.
4. Do you find I-55 then west is better than I-10 through Baton Rouge for getting to the retreat center?
Absolutely, take I-55. I will post driving directions in another post.
5. Is this rain or shine? If it’s pouring down rain Saturday and expected to rain all day Sunday I doubt I’ll come up. I understand a refund may not be an option.
Yes, rain or shine, we lock in meals and lodge rooms. Of course if you are not there to set up a tent you will not pay for that. We will have movies and powerpoint astronomy shows in the event of poor weather. We are also holding a raffle. (Note - not door prize tickets, raffle tickets have to be purchased.)
6. I like to use a green laser to point out things in the night sky to my friends. Can I use my green laser at the Spring Scrimmage?
The large majority of star parties do not allow the use of green lasers (also red, blue or any other color) when the sky is clear. Lasers, interfere with astrophotography and if it is clear some attendees will be doing astrophotography. The only exception to the use of lasers will be if it is cloudy and/or by mutual consent of everyone on the field, the use is allowed (unanimous jury).
7. It will be a hardship for me to leave my dog at home, can I bring him?
Dogs and other pets are banned at virtually all star parties for a variety of reasons. The Feliciana Retreat Center also has a restriction on pets. The only exception would be a properly trained service dog.
Other questions - please ask.
