As I said early on, for those who only want to attend the DSSG if the weather is very good, this coming Saturday may be your opportunity.
Right now Saturday is looking like our best weather day at the DSSG. As I said earlier, I recommended to those unwilling to gamble on the weather, look at the forecast and come up on the days and nights that meet your requirements. Right now that is looking like Saturday. While it will be comfortable during the day and cold at night, the forecast is for clear skies.
Yes, you will have to pay a bit more for registration if you want to set up equipment since you did not take advantage of early registration. (Late registration is $45.00 per person and $60 per family. If not setting up any equipment (telescopes, canopies, tents) the reduced registration fee is $15 per person and $20 per family. Note - full registration gives the registrant, single or family, one door prize ticket. There is no door prize ticket included if paying reduced registration. The Door Prize drawings are at 3 pm every day - Tuesday thru Saturday.
We still have plenty of room. Certainly plenty of room to set up equipment and we do have plenty of bunk availability (bring your own bedding, towels, soap, etc.). Check the weather and drive on up. The skies at White Horse are darker than what we had at the Feliciana Retreat Center and darker than what we have at our club (PAS) observatory. Additionally the horizons are lower so you will see a lot more of the sky at one time. It is very impressive.
Address: 315 Hurricane Creek Rd., Sandy Hook, MS (from New Orleans, up to and past Bogalusa on Hwy 21 to the LA/MS state line. The highway name changes to Hwy 35 in Mississippi. Continue about another 7 miles. You will see a man-made pond to your left , with a green arched small bridge. The road after this pond is Hurricane Creek Rd., turn left and go about 3 miles. You will see the White Horse sign on a fence. Turn to the right here and continue on this gravel road for about 1 mile. It is straight but does roller-coaster up and down some small hills. You will see the White Horse Retreat Center at the end of this road.
For our friends coming from south Mississippi and the Mobile area - you will likely take Hwy 98 up thru Hattiesburg and then over to Columbia, MS. At Columbia head south on Hwy 35, about 12 miles down you will pass the Country Diner on your left (good food here!). About 150 yards past the Country Diner, turn right on Hurricane Creek Road and go about 3 miles. Turn right at the White Horse sign and about 1 mile down the gravel road you will enter the White Horse Retreat Center.
