In addition to the Spring Scrimmage starting 4 weeks from today, today would have been the first day of the Spring Scrimmage had we been able to stay with our original dates of April 22nd to April 26th. So how would it have worked out weather wise? While it is windy and mostly overcast now it will become stormy late this evening and into Thursday. It could be very bad. Following the Thursday storms it should begin clearing by evening with most of Thursday night and Friday morning being good, followed by a few more good days. So not a great start, but a good follow-up for those who would have been able to come. Still and all the right decision was made. I think we will be in a much better position to judge the relative merits of doing a Spring Scrimmage 4 weeks from now. Here is hoping that the weather will cooperate.
I am putting a link right here - www.cloudynights.com/topic/701318-annual-2020-star-party-list-updated-with-known-cancellations-shown/ - see Post #4 for the lastest update. What this is is a listing of 2020 star parties around the country. Most to date have been cancelled. Some more are yet to cancel due to Co-Vid-19. Some will cancel after we have gone into Phase 1 or even Phase 2 of the recovery. So why are they cancelling? A multitude of reasons really and even those that do not cancel will have reduced attendance for a number of reasons. Cancelled events are predominantly larger events. Larger events attract a good number of people from further away and those people have logistical challenges in getting to various star parties (lodging and meal stops along the way). In addition when you have a large gathering it is harder to socially distance while at the event. Larger events may also have space limitations at the venue so separation between observers and their telescopes can be more difficult. All of this tends to make smaller events, like our Spring Scrimmage, more viable. People don't travel as far to get there. For many it is less than a 2 hour drive and most others are within 4 or 5 hours at most. At our venue, the White Horse Retreat Center, we have the room to spread out and we can further minimize potential crowding by limiting attendance to a maximum of 35 people as has been previously explained.
I do need to give Carol a good idea of how many we can expect and on what days so I ask all of you who are currently planning on attending to let me know that. All of you should now have access to the reservation form which was created about a week ago. Please complete it and send it in along with your $10.00 "good faith" payment which will be applied to your White Horse costs. It is basically your place holder.
