There, I have said it. As most would suspect whether or not we are able to hold the 38th Annual Deep South Star Gaze (making us the oldest continuous annual star party in the United States if we do) is yet to be determined. Some forces are beyond our control and some things are within our control, we just have to wait and see. What is beyond our control - 1)Venue deciding they do not want to host for whatever reason, or 2) The state of Mississippi preventing the White Horse Christian Retreat Camp from hosting any events What is within our control that will allow us to hold the Deep South Star Gaze this November - 1) Being smart and being safe. Some might argue that holding the DSSG at all is not safe given where we are now with relative risks concerning COVID-19. Assuming that the state of "relative risk" is about where it is right now some 3 months from now can we say it is safe? Probably not if we would have an attendance anywhere close to what we had at the DSSG in years past with typical attendance figures between 100 and 150. I think however that realistically given the current situation an attendance of something like 50 would be amazing and maybe a number of about 30 would be more realistic. 2) Additionally we have to be smart and we have to adjust to the situation we face. I want to refer everyone to some of the rules established for the upcoming El Dorado Star Party which takes place prior to the DSSG. Some attendees of the DSSG have attended that one so they are familiar with it, the surroundings and the layout. Please review this, which are new rules established because of COVID-19 - eldoradostarparty.org/coronavirus-and-esp/These rules are not unlike what we may have to do. Some may not like some of these guidelines but we have to look out for everyone. Please read the El Dorado rules and comment. I don't want anyone to not attend the DSSG because they feel what we have to do is too restrictive. I want people to come because they feel that the rules we have to have is in everyone's best interest. 3) Lodging in the bunkhouses will be restricted. We may only realistically have room for about 25 to 30 people in the bunkhouses to ensure safe spacing. 4) There will be no restrictions in terms of registration for those staying in rv's, campers, their own tents or staying off-site. 5) We may be on our own for meals. If we do at least one meal daily we may do something like "the snack bar meals" we have been doing in the evening, but doing that earlier when it is still light and encouraging everyone to bring their meal outside to eat. The situation in November will dictate that. Note - we could get some rv/camper die-hard astronomers who have not been able to attend other events. (Over 95% of American star parties have been cancelled this year. Most recently the Nebraska Star Party, Okie-Tex, and the Peach State Star Party have cancelled. A few more likely will. More news as we get it. Comments welcome. Barry Simon

Barry,
Lots of good ideas on ESP website.
1. Boxed meals (maybe one per day) and eating outside of dining room or on the field. It will be November, so weather permitting. If attendance is low, then indoor dining would not be a problem. 2. Mask wearing that we all are now used to. 3. Temperature checks. 4. Backup plan in case you feel sick after you arrive. (I like this one because it could happen over a five-day period, whether COVID or not.) 5. No sharing of eyepieces (hadn't thought of this issue). BYOEP to look through someone else's scope (with permission).
Most of us have been assuming some risk for months. I have been to Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes, vets office, etc. many times. I have my routine down for staying safe. Sometimes stores have been quite crowed and some people will not wear masks no matter what. Places like Sam's Club will not enforce mask wearing even though it is mandated in Louisiana right now. Maybe I've developed a false sense of security. I do not want COVID (assuming I have not had it), but I also want some semblance of a life. The DSSG is doable if everyone will do their part. It's not an ideal situation because we all enjoy the group conversations, sharing of information, and fellowship. But I had rather attend the stargaze under restricted conditions than not attend at all.
My greatest concern is about sleeping arrangements and making them safe. We can space out, but it is obviously indoors and we would be together in a smaller room for several hours. Barry, you may want to consider an extra statement about COVID in your liability waiver.
Of course conditions could change, for better or worse, before November. As Barry states, there are some factors beyond our control, and could take the decision out of our hands.
Those are my random thoughts.
Joe

Thanks Joe for your suggestions. It has now been almost 3 weeks since my last post. We are now just about 2.5 months out from the start of the 38th Annual Deep South Star Gaze. If we can hold the Deep South Star Gaze doing so will make us the oldest annually held star party (without a break) in the United States. That will be an achievement that we can all be proud of. There are other astronomical events that are older - Stellafane, the Texas Star Party and the Riverside Telescope Makers Convention; however Riverside held their last event in 2019 and then folded, and both Stellafane and the Texas Star Party cancelled. Stellafane had cancelled before during World War II and the Texas Star Party began 1 year before the DSSG. So, once again, if we do a DSSG this year we will have the longest streak going. (Other events like Okie-Tex, the Nebraska Star Party, Peach State, El Dorado, the Mid-South and a host of others all began after our first DSSG in 1983.) We were contemplating cancelling in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina, but we went ahead on a shortened schedule and it was one of our best with beautiful weather. Certainly I cannot guarantee that we will hold the DSSG this November, but as of right now we will. Our host, Carol Nicaud at White Horse is more than willing to have us come and she will be making every effort to keep us safe. I would however be deceiving all of you if I said that there is nothing to worry about/nothing in front of us to make us take extra precautions. We will need to do that because of COVID 19. The subject has been beaten to death so all I will do here is to post a link to what is on the El Dorado Star Party website. Requirements there that have been put in place because of COVID 19. As we move closer to our start date of November 10th, we will tweak our recommendations but I am sure that our recommendations to help keep all of us safe will look much like the El Dorado Star Party recommendations/requirements. eldoradostarparty.org/coronavirus-and-esp/As of now I know that we have regular DSSG attendees that are not likely to attend because of COVID. Some have told me that they are waiting for a vaccine, some are concerned because of their age and/or co-morbidities that they have. They may also feel that given restrictions the star party will just not be the same. We realize that. It will not be the same. Given the situation I think we will be lucky to hit an attendance of 30 to 40. (We had 9 at the Spring Scrimmage.) The lower attendance in some ways is a good thing, we can spread out more, both outside and inside. Our lower expected attendance and the abundant areas to set up at White Horse may have some appeal to others that have never attended a DSSG event. I am going to promote it on "CloudyNights" in an effort to get a few more attendees. I am going to focus on those that have not been able to attend other star parties this year because virtually all of them have cancelled officially. (Some were unofficially held at the same venues, with far smaller crowds.) I am also going to promote our low horizons and dark skies which are virtually on the Bortle 3/Bortle 4 boundary. Something else that will be different will be the fact that I am not going to solicit vendors for door prizes. With the lower attendance, and with virtually all other star parties being cancelled, and most importantly, the fact that their businesses have been off, doing so is not appropriate. What I will do is I will write to all of them and thank them for their past support. I will clearly explain that we are not asking for support this year. If they want to send catalogs, price sheets, etc., that will be great, but no prizes. Thanks! Thanks! Thanks! for their past support. Hopefully things will normalize for all of us in 2021. For those that think this means that we will have no Prize Give-Aways, think again. We will, we have a small collection of purchased prizes, mostly eyepieces, ready to go. I also have some very lightly used/new condition books that I will donate along with other prizes. We will have prizes! Something else we will not have this year given the current state of affairs is a registration fee like in past years. It will be greatly reduced. It will basically be a place holder to hold your reservation. We will likely cap the headcount when we approach the maximum number that I believe we can safely handle, likely no more than 30 that need bunks. (We can handle more - those staying in tents, campers, rv's and those staying off-site or just coming up for the day and early evening.) A lot to think about and I appreciate getting questions to respond to, so ask away. Hope to see some of you between November 10th and November 15th. Barry Simon

For me, it's too early to tell. Although I'm not in as deep of a recovery mode as I might possibly have been, I still need to be careful. That said, if I'm convinced it's sane by deadline-time I'd like to attend if possible. Too soon to say right now...

Hi friends,
I have just mailed in my registration forms a few days ago and I am looking forward with excitement to the 38th Annual DSSG!
With all of the negative factors of COVID-19 and the weather we have had in 2020, I feel that attending this year's star party to be crucial.
Especially, in order to help support our host Carol and our new star party venue The White Horse Christian Retreat Camp for the future as well.
I hope to see and observe with as many of you as possible in November!

Hi Barry,
I'm glad the DSSG is going forward, thanks for all the effort you are putting on that.
Saturday Nov. 14th is in my calendar, but I can't truly commit till a few days before. Difficult, but if weather forces me, I may change this Saturday for a work day. I can only go one night, maybe two if all Gods, stars and comets align. I won't need a bunk. I can bring a tent or sleep in my van. Survival mode: some room for my scope and my van is all I need for that night.
I realize this is not helping you organize the event. Thus, please update us just before or during the DSSG week about the possibility or not for hosting casual attendants like me. If I can go, just put whatever figure for the "annoying-last-minute-casual-guy-fee" and you will have the check as soon as I step out of the car.
Best, Santiago
