It is not too early to start thinking about our next one. We are just coming off a successful Deep South Spring Scrimmage where we experienced 4 clear nights with some good observing for the duration, something fairly rare these past few years. We had 25 people who attended, a big step up from the previous spring where our attendance was only 9 during the early days of the COVID Pandemic. As conditions continue to improve I anticipate that we should do better than the 55 attendees we had last November during the 38th Annual Deep South Star Gaze.
Something to consider as well - if we have one major limitation at the current home of the Deep South Star Gaze, it is the limitation we have in respect to housing couples on site given our bunk house logistics. In short we really only have the ability to offer private housing to just two couples. The only way this can work fairly is to give priority to two couples who are willing to reserve and pay for their housing for all 5 nights of the star gaze that get their completed registration forms with full payment in first. Note that registration forms will not become available here until sometime in late August to early September. I will let everyone know when registration forms are to be posted here and will post an announcement when they actually are posted. Rank order of registrations for the two rooms will be based on post mark dates of registrations, so no hand delivering to me if local or dropping the forms off thru the mail slot in my front door. Note too that if someone who scores one of those two slots later backs off to a stay of 4 nights or fewer, they lose their positions. Another registrant on the "waiting list" willing to commit to the full 5 night stay will move up on the list.
With the cancellation of other star parties over the last two years the Deep South Star Gaze has become the oldest continuously held star party (every year annually without a lapse) in the United States if not the world.
