Like other upcoming star parties, the Deep South Star Gaze will be mandating proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative COVID-19 screening test dated within 3 days of arrival at the DSSG for all attendees this fall. As like everyone else we had hoped that what measures we have been taking the past 20 months would have resulted in good control of COVID-19 by now. Unfortunately we are not there yet. Luckily we did not have to cancel any of the 3 events that were on our calendar since the pandemic started - our 2020 Spring Scrimmage in May, 2020, our 2020 38th Annual Deep South Star Gaze in November of 2020, and our 2021 Spring Scrimmage in May of 2021.
With our upcoming 39th Annual Deep South Star Gaze scheduled from November 2nd to November 7th and with the 4th surge of the pandemic going on at this time and in addition a variety of vaccine mandates being put into place by cities, states, businesses and star parties, we felt it best to do the same.
In addition one of the owners of our venue is going thru cancer therapy and he is on a transplant list. He is immunocompromised and we want to go the extra step in protecting him as well as ourselves. Enough said, we will have a COVID 19 vaccine mandate or negative COVID-19 test within 3 days of arrival in place for this fall, no exceptions other than for children who do not meet the age requirement to have a vaccine. All other registrants must be vaccinated or have that negative COVID-19 test dated within 3 days of arrival. All registrants will be required to show proof of same upon arrival.

A negative COVID-19 test done within 3 days of arrival at the DSSG will suffice in lieu of proof of vaccination. The post above has been amended to add this.

Barry, I got my vaccines in December and January. I suppose you’re not requiring a booster for entry are you?

No, no booster, although I was able to get one as some physicians still regard me as immunocompromised as I was treated aggressively for cancer and some of my wbc/rbc numbers never did get back within normal limits. Please note that the vaccine requirement was not just a Barry Simon decision. It was discussed amongst those of us that have taken an active role in the DSSG for years. Additionally I put out an email asking for feedback. Admittedly I got very little feedback, but all the feedback I got was positive and in favor of the vaccine mandate. Several who did not attend last year now say that they are more comfortable with the vaccine requirement and will likely attend because of it. As of now the Texas Star Party and the El Dorado Star Party have vaccine mandates. Others like Okie-Tex strongly recommend vaccination.

Further discussion about the Covid-19 vaccine mandate - Plain and simple: it makes good sense. The large majority of people, particularly those over age 40 have gotten the vaccine. Additionally study after study and report after report do show that while, unfortunately, the vaccine in some cases does not prevent one from contracting Covid, or transmitting it to others, it does prevent severe cases. Better than 90% of people that have to go on ventilators in hospitals have not received a Covid 19 vaccine.
Over a month ago I did send out a request to regular attendees of the Deep South Star Gaze to comment on what they thought about a mandate that we institute a policy where to attend one would have to show (upon arrival) vaccine proof. This request was sent out to approximately 20 of our long time attendees as well as to all who have served the DSSG in some way. For those I could not reach by email, I called on the phone. While the response back was not overwhelming in numbers, everyone who responded at that time were in favor of the vaccine mandate. Some did not attend last year out of concern about Covid and because there was no vaccine at that time. Some indicated that they would now attend if we had the vaccine mandate. We now have the mandate in place as does the Texas Star Party, the El Dorado Star Party, and perhaps the Peach State Star Party. Their website says - "The staff and volunteers will be adhering to CDC guidelines and attendees should expect to do the same."
As a private event we will continue to do everything to assure the safety of all attendees. Hopefully everyone understands our rationale. In addition one of our hosts, Donald, the brother of Carol, is on a transplant list and because of his current treatment, he is immunocompromised. We owe it to him to do everything we can to protect him.
