Programs at the Deep South Star Gaze have been a feature since our very first DSSG way back in 1983. This year is no exception, we will have programs. Programs are typically given between 11 am and 2 pm on Friday and Saturday.
As of now we have the following programs to offer to our attendees:
"Comet Catcher - Re-Do" - given by Len Philpot. Fine tuning and mounting the venerable Celestron Comet Catcher
"Solar Eclipse - April 8th 2024" - given by Barry Simon. Chasing and observing the upcoming total solar eclipse
"Independent Power for your Telescope and Accessories" - given by Barry Simon. Choosing, using and maintaining batteries for running scopes and equipment when AC power is not an option
Other programs can be added. Does anyone have a topic they would like to present to the attendees? One extra door prize ticket for each program you do
Let us know. Barry

We do need additional programs for the DSSG.
As of yesterday Len Philpot, DSSG Co-Director and administrator of this message board, informed me that he will not be able to attend this year due to a schedule conflict. Len was scheduled to do a presentation "Comet Catcher - Re-Do" and now that will not be happening.
As I said we can use additional programs. I am thinking that what works well are programs explaining to others what you might do to enhance your observing experience be it things like -
1) Keeping an Observing Journal, or
2) Improving a feature of your telescope, or your observing chair, or of your vehicle or trailer, all the sort of things to improve your time observing, or
3) One can do a program on a trip you took that had an astronomy theme, be it attendance at another star party, or a private trip where astronomy was a major part of your trip, or
4) One can do a program with images. I do have an LCD projector and computer. You can bring your laptop or just bring a thumb drive and we can make it work, or
5) One can talk about a major building project or maybe a component specific talk on a variety of topics such as eyepieces, binoculars, etc., etc.
Think about it, the possibilities are endless. We all attend star parties to learn.
Let me know, what some of you can do.
Barry
