........and historic. For one we had observing hours on all 4 nights of the star gaze. Everyone who attended was able to get some hours in under the stars. Regarding attendance we had a record attendance for a Spring Scrimmage with 30 attendees. We had 2 attendees, Bryan Shirkey from Huntsville and Greg Thompson from Mobile who came in early (on Monday). They headed up the Alabama contingent. Alabama was well represented with a total of 11 attendees. Greg and Bryan were also responsible for constructing our new portable power tree placed on the Arena Field. Thanks guys for all your contributions! As I said our weather was good. Warm days and cool nights with some very pleasant weather in the morning and the late afternoons. We were able to see the close conjunction of Jupiter and Venus on a morning or two and on Saturday morning we were able to view the pair close together courtesy of John Miele and his driven dobsonian telescope. Quite impressive as they were found in full daylight by John. Several got to see this. While the numbers for the Spring Scrimmage do not compare to what we get in the fall for the DSSG, a registration of 30 is enough to give the Spring Scrimmage more of a fall Deep South Star Gaze feel. Our host, Carol Nicaud, was gracious and accommodating as always. As they say, a good time was had by all. I will attach some pictures and a few more on successive posts. Barry

One of the projects I did at the Spring Scrimmage was a comparison of my Canon 60D camera (with an APS-C size sensor, smaller) to a full frame Canon 5D camera with the larger sensor. The Canon 5D was owned by Frank Castagna, now deceased. I am selling some of Frank's stuff for his wife and I wanted to see how well it works and if indeed there is a significant size difference when comparing the two. The 5D will have a larger field of view and because of that comparison of images taken with both will yield a smaller image scale with the 5D and a wider field of view. To do this I mounted (as shown in the photo) both cameras on a dovetail plate pointed in the same direction. The Canon 5D had my Tamron 90 mm f/2.5 macro flat field lens and my Canon 60D had a Canon zoom lens which topped out at 85 mm at f/5.6. As the Tamron is fast (f/2.5) exposures of 15 seconds is roughly equivalent to exposures that have to be 5 times as long with the 85 mm lens operating at f/5.6. To my eye though it appeared that a 15 second exposure with the fast Tamron lens needed the 85 mm f/5.6 lens to expose for about 2 minutes to be comparable. First target was the Orion Nebula, low in the western sky. All images are single images. The image scale is significantly smaller with the full frame 5D camera. Barry

Here is another comparison. Auriga with from upper left going diagonally down - M37, M36 and M38. You can see the whole basic familiar part of Auriga thru the Canon 5D with the 90 mm lens. You see a larger image, but not the same field of view with the Canon 60D, with the smaller field. Barry Attachments:

Too bad I couldn't make it this time. Weather forecast and family life are at fault. Oh, also the arrival of my new 12.5" NMT dob on Saturday late afternoon.
Actually, I was supposed to go there while John Miele was supposed not to... variability and change of plans is in the heart of the hobby. Well, I hope to be there for the DSSG, with the dob!
I'll add some sad news. I got to know via BRAS newsletter about the passing of Forrest Smith. I had very little to none relation to him (lack of chances), but I know he attended the DSSG in the past, or at least most of the occasions I've been there since 2019.
Keep safe age see you soon

Yes, we heard about Forrest. He had a long time relationship with Carol and Donald at White Horse. (He and Donald were childhood friends). He was a regular at the DSSG for at least most of the last 15 to 20 years or so. He will be missed.
