I was looking at the Excel Spreadsheet I keep as a historical reference as to our dates for all past DSSG events (note, this does not include Spring Scrimmage dates).
We do have our dates set for this year, but originally the week before was being considered. As is the DSSG this year does begin on the date of NEW Moon and it ends 4 nights later with the Moon setting at almost 10 pm. Note that it is still about 2 to 3 days from 1st Quarter and with the tree line it should not be an issue after about 8:45 pm or so when the trees obstruct it's view. Originally this was the reason why I proposed the previous Tuesday to Sunday time frame when the the DSSG would have started at Last Quarter and been less and less of an issue every night. So this year the early evening will be a good opportunity to observe the Moon and planets.
Looking ahead to subsequent years I was looking to see if there was any logical alternative to holding the 2023 DSSG on dates other than from the 7th to the 12th of November, and there is not In respect to the Moon phase we could have gone earlier with the early October but that makes no sense at all with the potential for hot weather and tropical storm concerns. So in 2023 we will be in November.
The following year in 2024 our dates do straddle Halloween but that in and of itself is not unusual as we have had the DSSG fall on Halloween a total of 4 times in the past.
2025 is a real issue with the best dates Moon phase wise being either October 14th to the 19th or November 11 to the 16th. If we go with the November dates that whould make 2025 the latest DSSG ever. The October dates in 2025 would tie it for the 3rd earliest start.
No problem with 2026, as November 3rd to the 8th are clearly the most logical dates.
